GOUVERNEUR — The Gouverneur Community Center will receive $50,000 in funding, according to an announcement made by state Sen. Patricia A. Ritchie, R-Heuvelton.

The 6,900-square-foot building in Riverside Park, at 4673 Route 58, houses a large community room with seating for 200, a lounge with a fireplace and a multi-purpose media room that seats 48 people.

It also houses a kitchen and several smaller rooms that can be used for classrooms, office space or storage.

Mrs. Ritchie said in a statement that the $50,000 will help the village and town with the costs associated with the paving of the gravel parking lot of the center. The parking lot did not have true markings for handicapped spots and the bigger rocks in the gravel were a safety issue for people walking in the lot, the release stated.

“This building is absolutely gorgeous and has truly lived up to its name,” Mrs. Ritchie said. “However, the gravel parking lot left it unsafe and incomplete. I am honored to be able to help the Gouverneur Community Center once again and make sure it’s as safe as it is fun for everyone who uses it.”

The Meals on Wheels program, which requires paved parking lots at all of its locations, can now also host meals at the Community Center and deliver meals to area homes, the release stated.

Village Mayor Ronald P. McDougall said the center “has been everything we dreamed it would be and more.”

“It’s hosted community events and has even been rented out for private functions, but most importantly it has afforded us the opportunity to bring in the much-needed ‘Meals on Wheels’ program,” Mr. McDougall said. “The new parking lot just adds to the user experience, the safety and overall beauty of this amazing facility.”

Since moving to the Center, the Gouverneur Meals on Wheels program has seen the number of people it has been able to provide meals to grow exponentially, the release stated.

The Community Center building, for which Mrs. Ritchie previously secured $100,000, opened in September 2016.
