North country jobless rates for May decline by one percent

North country counties’ May unemployment rates have dropped by about 1 percent each from the same time last year.

According to statistics from the state Department of Labor, Jefferson County’s unemployment rate for May fell from 6 percent last year to 5 percent. The May jobless rate decreased in Lewis County from 6.2 percent to 5 percent and in St. Lawrence County from 6.2 percent last year to 5.3 percent.

The May unemployment rates for Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties also fell from their April rates when they were 6.6 percent, 7.1 percent and 6.5 percent respectively.

The three counties also had lower jobless rates in May than in March when they were 8 percent in Jefferson County, 8.4 percent in Lewis County and 7.4 percent in St. Lawrence County.

Statewide, the May unemployment decreased from 4.4 percent last year to 3.7 percent, and nationwide, the rate fell from 4.1 percent last year to 3.6 percent.
