High school golf: M-W’s Van Buren shoots 78 at state tournament

ITHACA — Madrid-Waddington senior Grant Van Buren shot an 8-over-par 78 to lead area golfers after the opening round at the NYSPHSAA golf championships Sunday at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course.

Van Buren, who is tied for 26th place overall, recorded birdies on the sixth and 18th holes. Clifton-Fine sophomore Adam Slamczynski tied for 46th after shooting an 81.

Malone junior Matt Delisle was tied for 63rd with an 83, while Massena junior Terrell Thomas was 68th with an 84. Gouverneur freshman Dylan Farr and Massena junior Jake Amo both shot an 86.

Other area golfers are Jake VanHouse (85) and Kelson Hooper (94) both of Ogdensburg Free Academy, and Norwood-Norfolk freshman Jacob Dutch (99).

Croton’s Matt Ferrari leads after the first day with 1-under 69. The final round starts at 9 this morning.
