Although local speller Ali Van Tassel and AuSable Forks speller Lucas Tardif didn’t make it into today’s finals of the 2018 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., there are still two New York spellers to cheer for in the fifty remaining spellers.

Sravanth Malla, a 14-year-old 8th-grader, speller number 315, is from Haverstraw in Rockland County. Sravanth previously competed in 2015 (tied for 50th place), 2016 (tied for 15th place) and 2017 (tied for 41st place).

Melodie Loya, a 13-year-old 7th-grader, speller number 398, is from Bainbridge in Chenango County. Melodie previously competed in 2017 and tied for 18th place.

The beginning of the finals will be aired from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today on ESPN2; the finals will wrap up from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. on ESPN.
