MASSENA — Although the 2018 Massena/Louisville Relay for Life is still several months away, the planning process for the June event begins tonight.
The first Planning Committee meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at the Massena Moose Lodge, Ames Street.
“The committee is in need of volunteers to help with planning the main event in June and other small events through the year,” said Denise Furnace, Relay for Life co-chair.
She said it wouldn’t take much time to be part of the planning effort.
“We only ask you to spend about an hour each month attending a meeting and maybe a couple of hours the rest of the month with small tasks,” Ms. Furnace said.
She said, for those who volunteer, there’s a satisfaction knowing that they’ll have been a part of the effort when cancer is finally eradicated.
“Each time a friend, acquaintance or family member is told they are cancer-free, you can celebrate with them knowing you were part of the cure,” she said.
Ms. Furnace said last year’s Relay for Life in Louisville featured 13 teams that raised $49,968 and celebrated with 31 survivors. And, she said, the money they raise is put to good use.
“With the money raised by the many Relays for Life in our area and worldwide, the American Cancer Society is able to research new and better cures for cancer, provide information on over 70 different cancers, present treatment information, caregiving advice or patient support programs,” she said. “The American Cancer Society also promotes education to reduce cancer risks.”
More information about the American Cancer Society’s efforts with the money that’s raised can be found at cancer.org.
Those efforts make it all the more important that volunteers step forward to assist with the local Relays for Life, Ms. Furnace said.
“In order to raise these funds, Relay for Life needs people to give up a few hours of their time to plan these events and also to look for sponsors,” she said.
The major sponsors for the June 2017 Massena/Louisville Relay for Life included St. Lawrence Health Systems/Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Alcoa, employees of Potsdam Specialty Papers, Mix 96.1/101.5 The Fox/1340 WMSA, Northern New York Newspaper Corp., Hurlbut Tent Rental, 7 News/Fox 28/Me TV, and DJ Jenn Murray. As major sponsors, their names were listed on the back of all the participants’ T-shirts.
Anyone who is interested in serving as a committee member, team captain or participant is invited to stop by the Moose Lodge tonight. For more information, visit the group’s Facebook page, MassenaRelayForLife or www.relayforlife.org/massenany.
