CARTHAGE — Final approval has been given to changes in the Carthage Area Chamber of Commerce Holiday Parade, including holding the event at night.

For years, the Holiday Parade has been held the second Saturday in November, traveling from West Carthage into Carthage along the main streets. However, this year that date falls on Veterans Day and brought objections from the village of West Carthage Board of Trustees.

“We feel it is inappropriate to hold another event on the day that honors our nation’s many men and women who served in the Armed Forces,” states a letter to the chamber, signed by Mayor Scott M. Burto.

For the past two years, the village of West Carthage has had a nighttime Christmas parade.

Mr. Burto attended the August Chamber Board of Directors meeting to pitch the idea of combining the two parades.

“The idea was very well received,” said chamber executive director Lori A. Borland.

In the past, the chamber has toyed with the idea of having a night parade.

Mr. Burto suggested holding the parade at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, lining up along Church Street or North James Street in Carthage. The procession would head west on State Street, crossing the bridge into West Carthage, turning onto South Jefferson Street to Liberty Street to South Main concluding at River Bend Park. Following the parade, as has been the practice for the past two years, a tree lighting is planned. If funding can be obtained, the evening would conclude with fireworks.

The parade changes came before the Carthage Board of Trustees at its Monday meeting.

“Whatever the chamber wants, I’m in favor of,” said Carthage trustee Michael F. Astafan prior to the board’s vote in favor of the changes.

“We are looking forward to having our first night holiday parade,” said Ms. Borland after hearing of the approval from both villages.

The parade coincides with the Twin Village Christmas Festival set for Dec. 9 along with the chamber’s Memory Tree Lighting ceremony.

“It will be a wonderful kickoff to the holiday weekend,” said the chamber director.

More information concerning participating in the parade will be available through the chamber website at http://www.carthageny.info/ closer to the date of the event.
