CANTON — Voters will be asked today to decide whether or not Canton Central School will move forward with a capital project to construct new bathroom and concessions facilities at the site of the brand new baseball and softball fields that are near completion just down the road from the school. The vote occurs from noon to 8 p.m. today in the high school library, 99 State St.

The school is asking to approve $450,000 worth of funding to construct a restroom and concession stand facility near the middle of the grounds and another restroom facility near the area where visiting teams will be dropped off by their school buses.

Superintendent William A. Gregory indicated in September the school has the money to complete the project.

“We have district undesignated funds in our reserves that would be used to pay for it, along with a substantial donation we are expecting from the community. The Pee Wee Association itself is pledging a pretty significant amount of money toward that project,” he said. “There is not expected to be any additional cost to the taxpayer. We have the money in hand to pay for this.”

The larger building in the center of the complex will feature a concession stand with three serving windows, each facing a different ballfield. There will be a sheltered seating area and three restrooms will be available on the back side of the facility.

The smaller restroom facility will be located at a bus turnaround point and will also be more accessible to fans watching games at the varsity baseball field. The school plans to develop a larger parking lot near the restrooms at a later date.

Existing infrastructure from the former BOCES building will be used to connect water and sewer lines to the smaller bathroom facility. Mr. Gregory said both new buildings will match the rest of the new construction on site.

Mr. Gregory said he hopes to have the buildings completed by the time the fields are ready for action.
