MALONE — Location scouting has begun for the upcoming “Escape at Dannemora” Showtime miniseries in the greater Malone area.

Filming will begin in September for the production, which will chronicle the escape from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora of convicted murderers Richard Matt and David Sweat, aided by former prison tailor shop supervisor Joyce Mitchell.

The eight-episode series will star Patricia Arquette as Mitchell, Paul Dano as Sweat, and Benicio Del Toro as Matt.

Evan Eley, a location assistant for the production, addressed the Town Council on Wednesday to describe tentative filming plans. The visit follows Eley’s attendance at Tuesday’s Burke town meeting.

Though Eley is alone in conducting only a preliminary search, he noted a larger scale scouting operation is forthcoming. Once the locations are chosen, the production will “take over for a couple of weeks in September,” he said.

In addition to possible locations in Constable and Burke, Eley detailed exterior shots of Malone businesses, including Sansone’s restaurant and the King’s Wok buffet.

He also cited Bellmont’s Wolf Pond Road and the nearby abandoned rail line as part of “Mr. Stiller’s vision.” Actor and director Ben Stiller, known for his work in films such as “DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story” and the “Night at the Museum” movies, is producing and directing the miniseries.

Densely wooded areas like the Wolf Pond Road area provided cover for Matt and Sweat as they eluded authorities for 23 days in 2015.

Open auditions for roles as extras will be held at Plattsburgh’s Strand Central Theatre from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
