Local colleges: Maryland earns 18-11 win over SU in women’s lacrosse

SYRACUSE — Caroline Steele registered five goals and two assists as the second-ranked University of Maryland women’s lacrosse team downed Syracuse, 18-11, in a nonconference game Sunday at the Carrier Dome.

Taylor Hensh added four goals and Megan Whittle provided three goals and two assists for the Terrapins (5-1). Sam Swart and Emily Hawryschuk each netted three goals for the Orange (4-2).

■ Stefanie Miller collected a pair of hits against Blackburn (Ill.) College, but the SUNY Canton softball team dropped a pair of games to open the season in the Gene Cusic Classic at Fort Myers, Fla., on Sunday. SUNY Canton was defeated by Kenyon (Ohio) College, 8-0, and lost to Blackburn, 5-0.
