FORT DRUM — An author of a book about the 10th Mountain Division’s World War II roots spoke Wednesday to the division’s current soldiers and enthusiasts of the unit.

McKay Jenkins, who wrote “The Last Ridge: The Epic Story of the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division and the Assault on Hitler’s Europe,” spoke about the development of the division, the division’s training at Camp Hale in Colorado, and how the division in 1945 played a key role in major offensives in Italy, such as daring nighttime mountain attacks at Mount Belvedere and Riva Ridge.

The book inspired a WPBS documentary of the same name, which premiered in 2007.
